Rhetoric

Mark Evans, one of my colleagues at work, today wrote something that I personally found interesting, so I am posting it here for others to see.

Nothing new about what he is saying, just nicely put.

... this ridiculous extremist left vs. extremist right "debate" is doing nothing other than drawing attention away from debate on real issues. The problems with people like Michael Moore and Ann Coulter is that they aren't arguing about fact; they don't discuss issues. They choose specific things to take out of context and try to build an emotional anger response. The result is that no-one's mind is changed, but both sides become more polarized. Those who believed you before are now morally outraged, and those who don't believe barely even pay attention. Sometimes those who didn't believe before become morally outraged and are driven further into their polarized corner, and you see more and more indignant discussions about how horrible this individual is (not specifically referring to this conversation, but look at any of the fallout surrounding any of these "pundits," leftwing or rightwing).

To defeat these people you don't give them credit for their "debates" by entering in to them, you ignore them. If no one pays attention, maybe they'll go away and democracy can go back to it's spirit: an informed populace making informed decisions. I know, I know: I live in a dream world.
