A year in pictures.

MSNBC have an excellent collection of photographs from the year 2003 called The Year in Pictures 2003 that I found amazing. I voted for "I get misty...".

Too bad they have it all hidden in a flash movie so I can't link to the pictures directly :(

New words for the English Language

yourDictionary.com has a list of the Top Ten Words Of 2003.

My favorite is "Allision" The National Transportation and Safety Board in investigating the Staten Island ferry tragedy concluded it wasn't a collision (between two moving objects) but an allision (a crash with an immoveable object).

Moaning

People that moan about IE's support of CSS amuse me. Don't get me wrong, getting IE and Gecko and Opera all working is pretty hard, for example my lass CSS change screwed up Gecko in my menus. I forgot to check and now it just looks wrong.

The point is that IE6 isn't standard compliant. It's almost 3 years old, and it won't get any better. Moaning won't help, and contrary to the Microsoft Hater's theory, Microsoft didn't make IE6 not support CSS1 in some big conspiracy.

So either you try to support IE6, and you live with the problems, or you don't, but there really is no reason to moan about it, not to mention that Hating companies is so 90s.

Changes to the blog

I'm working on improving (well making the way I like) the blog. I don't have pop-ups for comments anymore, instead I used a bit of nifty HTML to make the comment form appear in-line. Also I had to change the default extension of each of the entries, which basically means all the old 'permalink' URIs have become invalid, but since I don't think anyone has ever hard linked to them, it's not the end of the world.

Additionally I am considering moving the weblog to be the basis of garethlewin.com, instead of just a section. When I do finally write some recipes, I can just put them into the blog etc, so if I do that it might make the rss feed URI invalid, which is something I don't want to do, as I know at least one of you out there has this page syndicated. I'll see what I can do.

So I hope those of you that do read this page enjoy the new changes :)

Mini iPods ?

There are rumors around about Apple releasing mini iPods. The most concrete information that I have seen is in an article on Think Secret.

Gosh I hope this is true. Mainly for the price tag more than anything. Also the idea of it being pocket sized is pretty tempting. I was going to look for an iPod in the post-Christmas sales, and I will still keep my eye out, but I will probably wait to see what happens with the new mini iPods.

Internet Radio

Lately i've been listening to the following two RadioStorm radio stations. The Hardrock. and the Alternative one. To be honest the Hardrock seems more like Alternative from 8 years ago, and the alternative one is more 'up to date'.

Life in England

I've only been awake an hour today, but I heard two things on the news that amused me.

Firstly "Anne's dog 'kills Queen's corgi'" is one of the biggest news stories this morning in England. By one of the biggest I mean it's number 3 in the headlines.

Secondly, there is the story that Mars lander heading for surface British Beagle 2 will precede two U.S. rovers Now the issue that amused me isn't the British Glee about winning, that is just silly, it's more about the names of the crafts. The British craft is called "Beagle 2", named (if I am not mistaken) after a Dog. The American crafts are called Spirit and Opportunity. That to me says a lot.

Update:
I stand correctly, as James Freiwirth says in the comments, Beagle II was in fact named after Darwin's ship. I should have checked my facts (I'm sure I heard the dog story on the Radio) before posting.

Side note, I wonder if Spirit and Opportunity actually work...

Everything is relative

On the Radio this morning I heard the following quote from some American official ".. the probability of a terrorist attack on New York today is equivalent or higher than on September the 11th 2001".

Can someone explain that to me ? The probability of a terrorist attack on New York (with the knowledge we have now) on that day was 100%.

Return of the King

I have to say, The Lord of the Rings trilogy is almost perfect. RotK is excellent. I really enjoyed it.

I haven't read the books, well I have tried, but I find them tedious and boring. But now I can understand why people like Tolkien so much.

If you haven't seen it, go and see it !

The Plan

1. In the beginning was the Plan.
2. And then came the Assumptions.
3. And the Assumptions were without form.
4. And the Plan was without Substance.
5. And darkness was upon the face of the Workers.
6. And the Workers spoke among themselves saying, "It is a crock of shit and it stinks."
7. And the Workers went unto their Supervisors and said, "It is a crock of dung and we cannot live with the smell."
8. And the Supervisors went unto their Managers saying, "It is a container of organic waste, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it."
9. And the Managers went unto their Directors, saying, "It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none may abide its strength."
10. And the Directors spoke among themselves, saying to one another, "It contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong."
11. And the directors went to the Vice Presidents, saying unto them, "It promotes growth, and it is very powerful."
12. And the Vice Presidents went to the President, saying unto him, "It has very powerful effects."
13. And the President looked upon the Plan and saw that it was good.
14. And the Plan became Policy.
15. And that is how shit happens.

Gotta feel sorry for them.

Gamespot don't like Drake of the 99 Dragons.

To be honest, till today I hadn't even heard of the game, and I doubt I will ever play it. But two options come to mind.

Either it's a very harsh review, in which case I have to feel for the developers, nothing is worse than having something you worked on for months or years being badmouthed.

Or it's a very crap game, in which case I hope people don't buy it, and game developers start caring about what they are working on again. Professional pride is the one biggest missing element in computer games today, Star Wars Galaxies being a prime example (of lack of professional pride)
